A free trial can be useful when you know what you want to try and when it ends. Compare these details before you start.
Check the trial length and eligibility
Look for the start date, end date and whether the offer is for new customers only. A headline may not explain every restriction.
Look for renewal and payment terms
Read whether a payment method is required and what happens when the trial ends. Note the renewal amount, billing frequency and cancellation deadline shown by the provider.
Set your own reminder
If the trial renews, save a reminder before the cancellation deadline. Keep the provider’s confirmation and instructions where you can find them.
Decide what you want to test
Choose one or two features to try. At the end, decide whether they are useful enough for you to continue.
Your free trial checklist
Before signing up, copy the following details from the provider’s checkout or terms into your own notes. If a detail is unclear, pause and ask the provider.
| Detail to record | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Who is eligible? | Offer eligibility and location restrictions |
| When does the trial end? | Signup confirmation and trial duration |
| What will renewal cost? | Price, billing interval, fees and tax details |
| How do I cancel? | Provider instructions and the cancellation deadline |
| Where is my confirmation? | Account or confirmation email |
A decision you can make before signup
Name the feature you want to test and the maximum ongoing cost you would accept. Set your reminder using the provider’s stated deadline. A reminder does not cancel a subscription for you.
